Do you actually need a wedding videographer? The honest answer

I film weddings for a living, so you’d expect me to say yes. Fair. But stick with me, because the honest answer is “usually, but not always.”

The thing nobody tells you about your wedding day

It goes fast. Ridiculously fast. You spend a year planning it and it’s over in what feels like twenty minutes. Ask anyone who’s been married a while and they’ll tell you the same thing: they barely remember chunks of it.

Photos are brilliant at freezing a moment. But they can’t give you your dad’s voice cracking halfway through his speech. The way your best mate laughed during the vows. The noise the room made when you walked in. That’s what film does, and you can’t get it back afterwards.

“We’ll just get a guest to film it on their phone”

You can. Here’s what usually happens: shaky vertical video, a guest’s head blocking the aisle, and wind noise drowning out every word of the vows. And that guest misses the wedding they came to enjoy.

Phones are great. They’re not a plan.

The regret test

There’s a reason “we wish we’d booked a videographer” comes up again and again when couples look back on their wedding. You rarely hear the opposite. Nobody watches their wedding film ten years later and thinks, “shame about that money.”

When you genuinely don’t need one

I’d rather you spent your money well than spent it with me. You probably don’t need a videographer if:

  • it’s a tiny register-office wedding and a few phone clips will genuinely do you,
  • neither of you would ever sit down and watch it back, or
  • the budget means choosing between film and something you care about more, like the venue or your photographer.

That last one matters. If it’s film or photos, most people should pick photos. If you can stretch to both, do.

If budget’s the problem

You don’t need the all-singing, all-dancing package. A shorter booking that covers the ceremony and speeches, the bits with words that matter, gets you most of the value for a lot less. My Ceremony package starts from £895 for exactly that reason.

So, do you need one?

If you’ll want to hear those voices again in twenty years, yes. If not, honestly, put the money somewhere else.

If you’re leaning towards yes, have a look at some of my films and see if they feel like you. Then check your date.
